Drug - Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE)
Why a
Drug - Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE)?
Performing a DISE is the first step in assessing OSA patients for treatment options other than CPAP. In most cases, patients should NOT undergo sleep surgery without prior DISE.Â
During a DISE procedure, patients receive medication that will make them sleep for a few minutes. Patients will develop upper airway obstruction so that Dr. Weidenbecher can find out which surgery works best and is most successful. Â
Following the DISE Dr. Weidenbecher will discuss a treatment plan with options. He has performed thousands of DISE procedures over the years and he has experience even with the most complex OSA cases. In some instances, more than one surgery might be necessary to achieve the desired outcome. Patients will have a full understanding of what is needed to improve their apnea prior to moving forward with any surgery.Â
Dr. Weidenbecher is able to offer OSA treatment to most patients that cannot use CPAP. Â
While the patient is put in a sleep-like state for 10 minutes using medications, a small camera is used to inspect various upper airway levels possibly contributing to upper airway obstruction. This very important examination allows Dr. Weidenbecher to develop a personalized treatment plan for his OSA patients.
