Benign Vocal Cord Nodules
Blood-blister (hemorrhagic vocal cord polyp)
Vocal cord nodules in a signer. These interfere with complete closure resulting a raspy voice and loss of the upper singing range.
Normal Stroboscopy
Surgical removal of vocal cord nodule.
Stroboscopy example of a patient with vocal cord nodules. The video on the left shows the preoperative findings with incomplete closure of the vocal cords due to the nodules with a breathy sound quality. The video in the middle shows the surgical resection the nodules, and the video on the right demonstrates the postoperative outcome with straight vocal cords that can now completely close and have a normal mucosal wave. Especially for voice professionals it is important that the superficial lamina propria is preserved during surgery to maintain a normal mucosal wave.

Endoscopic laser and balloon treatment of airway stenosis
Vocal Cord Paralysis
The left vocal cord (right side on image) is immobile after thyroid surgery led to injury of the vocal cord nerve.
The vocal cords are not closing when speaking and are leaking air. The patient is hoarse and has trouble swallowing.
Video of a patient with left-sided vocal cord paralysis.
Notice the breathy voice quality before surgery. The vocal cords are barely touching because the left vocal cord is unable to move into the middle position. After surgery, the vocal cords are now in full contact when speaking, there is much less air leakage and the voice quality is much improved.
Reinke's Edema
BEFORE TREATMENT: Large and floppy vocal cord polyps (Reinke Edema). This female patient sounded very low-pitched and she described her voice as "male like".
AFTER TREATMENT: 8 weeks after KTP-laser treatment of polyps in the office.
BEFORE TREATMENT: Large polyps in a smoker.
AFTER TREATMENT: 8 weeks after KTP-laser treatment of polyps in the office. The vibratory layer of the vocal cords was kept intact giving this patient her female voice back.

Laryngeal Papilloma
Both images show the same patient with laryngeal papilloma (RRP). The left image is a regular light endoscopy. The right image shows the same findings using narrow-band imaging (NBI) technology. NBI oftentimes allows for earlier recognition of RRP. Papilloma has a strawberry-like appearance, due to its abnormal vascularization. RRP is caused by a virus which in some cases causes the papilloma to grow back.
