Total Or Partial Voice Box Removal
Partial or total removal of the voice box (laryngectomy) is usually recommended if cancer treatment is anticipated to result in a non-functional voice box. This may be the case, if the cancer is very advanced or encompasses certain key areas of the voice box which are important for breathing, speaking, and talking.Â
For advanced-stage voice box cancer, combined chemo and radiation therapy are often times recommended, which, unfortunately, can lead to significant damage to the surrounding tissue. Permanent neck scarring, throat dryness, swallowing difficulties, feeding tube and tracheostomy (breathing tube in the neck) dependence are not uncommon after chemo and radiation therapy.
